Another waterfowl season has now come to an end here on Smith Island. Overall, the season was much better than last year although we still had some of those unseasonably warm days that bode ill for hunting our winged friends. We bagged more geese this year than last along with redheads, canvasbacks, green-winged real, hooded merganzers, red-breasted merganzers, pintails, black ducks, widgeons, gadwalls and, of course, buffleheads (or Smith Island chickens as one group fondly named them). To the boys who had the misfortune to witness the oddity of fair weather winter days here on the island, you missed out. The last weekend of the season, Mike H. and the good Capt. had a huge flock of redheads present themselves front and center. I knew it had been a good day when they returned to warmth of the lodge and all I could see was camo and smiles. Take care, keep warm and we will see you all again soon.

All posts cannot be pleasant and I am afraid this is one. We have been trying to keep our prices down and haven't raised them since the Spring 2006 season. Unfortunately, fuel prices have more than doubled since then and we are forced to raise our rates to reflect that rise. We still, of course, have our special two day package and you can find information on the package and new rates under the "Specials" tab. We thank you for understanding and we know that everyone is feeling the pinch from high fuel costs.
